Augusta, GA – John “Red” Allen Owens, Jr., 90, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at Charlie Norwood Veterans Medical Center.
Given the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Red’s celebration of life service will take place at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 3rd at the High Praises Church of God located at 1896 Knobcone Avenue, North Augusta, SC, where he was a stalwart member.
He was born in Ellenton, SC, to the late John Allen Owens, Sr. and the late Elizabeth Berry Owens. Just last month he celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by family and friends.
After serving in the US Army, he established Owens Well and Pump Service, LLC which remains a family-owned business run by his son, Jarrod. Red lived a full life and was an avid racer in his younger days. In 1956, he competed in the famous & quot; Daytona Flying
Mile & quot; where he earned an 8th place finish. He won more than 80 drag races.
He loved his caregivers. He recently said, “I know that I have been feisty at times, but I love each of my caregivers and am grateful for their amazing dedication and service.”
He is survived by sons James (Lucia) Owens of Lexington, VA; Jarrod Owens of Grovetown/Hepzibah, GA; and Jack Minor of Waynesboro, GA. He is also survived by his grandson Jarrod Owens, Jr. of Grovetown/Hepzibah, GA.
