John W. Darnell
John W. Darnell, 81, of Barnwell, SC, passed away at 12:37 am, Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Aiken Regional Medical Center. He was born on April 15, 1933 in Bamberg County, to Annie Elizabeth and Ben Tillman Darnell. John served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1956. He was a proud member of the American Legion, and supported many of their endeavors. John has been a member of Ghents Branch Baptist Church his entire life.
John is survived by his wife of 59 years (Kathleen), his three daughters, Vicky (Herman) Wood of Barnwell, Barbara (David) Crosby of Brunson, Sandra (Charles) Yates of Columbia, stepson Roy (Angela) Maguinness of England, and son-in-law Mark Woodman of Barnwell. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
John is preceded in death by his parents (Annie Elizabeth and Ben Tillman Darnell), two brothers (B.T. Darnell and Joe Darnell) and a sister (Dorothy Sellers).
Funeral services will be 11 am on Tuesday July 29, 2014 at Dyches Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Burt Petty. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Burial service will be held at Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the American Legion in support of Boys’ State.
Pall bearers include Jonathan Woodman, David Crosby Jr., John Crosby, Bo Darnell, Andy Elkins, George Hutson, Ray Sanders, and Wayne Bodiford.
The family has entrusted Dyches Funeral Home and Crematory with the arrangements.
